Intermediate Class:

Joey Young will be leading a 3-day workshop at the Taos Wools classroom in Arroyo Seco, New Mexico.  Centered on the use of TEXT as a form of expression in your weaving. Many weavers express themselves using color and design, in this workshop Joey would like to help everyone explore the power of words! We’ll discuss how to combine other elements (gradation, adding texture, layering designs) to compliment your design.

Students will be weaving a 15” x 15” piece during the class to ensure that they will be able to complete a piece in the 3-day timeframe.

This class is for intermediate weavers only due to the usage of slightly advanced techniques (gradation, hatching, weft bundling, addition of texture) alongside time constraints. During the class Joey will be helping to trouble shoot any issues that arise and answer any technique-related questions you may have.

Materials Provided:

• Large selection of Medium Weight Churro Yarn
• Schacht Baby Wolf and Wolf Pup Looms

Materials to Bring (optional):

Favorite weaving fork or tapestry beater
Bobbin of your choice (plastic, paper, reed)
Favorite shuttle
Bedding material (cotton, wool, fabric strips, any material that you can use to keep the warp open for the beginning and the end)

Each day class starts at 9 AM with an hour break for lunch at noon. We wrap up the day at 4 PM all three days.

Joey Young was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1981.

He is trained in traditional Zapotec style of weaving, also having studied tapestry and pattern weaving.

His influences come heavily from southwest designs (Navajo, chimayo and Pueblo style weaving) and Zapotec designs. Joey says “I am very drawn to nature and love weaving animals when I get a chance to”.
